Today's picture shows a construction worker operating a Pipe Vice. The picture was taken in 1942 at a chemical plant near Las Vegas, Nevada.

Today's picture shows a couple of hard working construction men taking their lunch breaks. I recognize the old rounded top lunch box, with thermos. This is the type of lunch box my grandfather used for years when he worked in the oil field. I have not seen one of those in a long time.

Welcome to Construction Workers week here at OPOD. We are going to be looking at pictures from back in the day when people actually built things. Today's picture is from 1940, and it shows two construction workers working on Shasta Dam in California. I love the old aluminum style hard hats.

Today's picture shows a woman sharecropper. The picture was taken in Arkansas near West Memphis in 1936. In looking at the picture, I notice the terrible condition of her shoes and socks. It would be hard to work with tattered shoes like that. It is sad that many people in the world today still operate at this barely survive level. As Americans, I fear we often whine too much and do not appreciate the simple things like enough food, shelter, and good shoes.

Welcome to Sharecropper Week here at OPOD. We will be taking some time to look at the life of sharecroppers some hundred years ago.
We start with this picture of a sharecropper's wife and cabin. The picture was taken in 1937 about ten miles south of Jackson Mississippi.

Today's picture shows a woman doing laundry. I have to admit that I think it is a little bit of a shame that few people use clothes lines any more. They really do a great job, and clothes dried in the sun have a special feel and smell. This picture was taken in 1903.

Today's picture shows women switchboard operators. The picture is from 1959. It is amazing how much things have changed in our lifetimes! It is hard to imagine that some phone calls as late as the 1960's were still be routed manually by people making the connections individually.

Today's picture shows a family gathering the harvest of their garden. They are working together to pick the peas. The picture was taken i 1939 in Georgia.
I really hate to see Gardening Week wrap up today, but I hope it has motivated you all to go out and have a great garden this year.

Today's picture shows some young men buying seeds for their garden. I usually order seeds from the colorful catalogs that come in late winter. I will admit that I get overheated and buy way too many different varieties of seeds. The catalogs really give you the gardening fever.

I love this picture from 1943 of a girl getting ready to work in her garden. I love the big smile on her face. Have you ever noticed that Gardeners tend to be happy people? Now, here is the question . . . is it that gardening makes people happy, or is it that happy people tend to garden?

Today's picture shows a man tending his corn patch. I have to admit that I usually don't see people dressed this well working in a garden. The picture is from 1918.
Perhaps someone could explain the function of the little hand plow he is using? Is it for turning the ground under, or is he using it for weeds?

OK, it is March 1st and we are beginning to feel a little spring time in the air. So, this is going to be "Gardening" week here at OPOD. We start with this picture from 1944 showing a woman getting her garden going in New York.
So, how many of you plan on planting a garden this year. I hope many of you will get out and get one going!
